chicks

07.22.10

you may remember that i wrote about chickens a little while ago. we got those chickens as adults, they were older and in need of a home so we took them in. after realizing how nice they were to have around we decided to go ahead and get more, this time raising them from chicks.  there are 9 in total.  at the moment they are living indoors but i take them out into my vegetable garden every day so they can peck around. you can see more photos of them here.

the unintentional hostage

06.10.10

i was just about to hop in the shower when i heard a loud noise come from downstairs.  i went to go see what caused it and as i round the corner in the hallway i meet face to face with - a bird!  really?  a bird? in my hallway?  yes.  i shrieked.  ok, i screamed.  not that birds are scary but taken out of context, coming across one in your home is.

oh, did i mention i was nude?  well, i was on my way to the shower…

so i run into the bedroom and close the door behind me and get some clothes on.  i duck my head back out into the hallway, no sign of the bird anywhere.  and then i look into the bathroom and there it is.  sitting on the windowsill trying to figure out how to leave.

i close the door on it, trapping it in the bathroom.  while i don’t want it to stay i also don’t want it frantically flying around my house trying to find an exit. now i know i can just open the window screen and it will happily fly out but i don’t know how my screens work.  what? how can you not know how to use the screens? i know, i know… what can i say? i’m not the handiest person in the world.

so there the bird sat until c got back.

and just to assure you that no harm came to it, here is a photo just moments after it was set free -

head in the clouds

06.07.10

shouldn’t come as much of a surprise really, it happens every year.  the day after renegade and i’m feeling a bit aimless and dazed.  i work so hard and am so focused for weeks leading up to it.  and then once it’s passed i’m left with a feeling of what do i do now?

well, for starters, i’m going to spend some time with the pup and the man.  i’m going to cook a nice dinner tonight and just relax and unwind for a day or two. i’ll be back soon.  xo

mmm… doughnuts

05.17.10

when it comes to sweets cupcakes will always be my first love. but doughnuts, well who doesn’t love a good doughnut every now and again?

while picking up a few goodies for dexter i came across these and scooped them up immediately.  he loved them (shocking, i know).

if you have a pup in your life that needs a doughnut fix you can get these and a few other cute treats right here.

chickens!

04.26.10

yes, chickens.  seven of them.

i had mixed emotions about getting them.  on one hand i like being able to have fresh eggs and the chickens provide excellent (and natural) fertilizer for our garden. but on the other hand, what do i know about raising chickens?

it turns out they are fairly easy to care for.  the kind we have are orpington chickens which as it turns out is one of the friendlier breeds.  they don’t mind being held and they eat out of my hand!

taking a break

12.23.09

poor neglected blog.  i haven’t posted since the beginning of the month and when i do finally come to post it’s only to say that i’m taking a break!

i’ve been going nonstop since the beginning of november and i am tired. i need to relax, unwind, stop thinking, stop doing. just for a little while.  so i’m going to take this time between the christmas holiday and the new year to spend good quality time with chris and dexter and family and friends.

hope you all have a lovely holiday and a happy new year!

snow

ps - this photo of me is not recent. despite living in the mountains we haven’t had snow in weeks!  it just seemed appropriate to the post so i thought i’d add it.

dexter update

10.06.09

it’s been awhile!  my last dexter update was back in july.  the little man is 10 months old now, i can’t believe he’ll be a year in no time at all!  he’s gotten a bit bigger but not much.  he’s quite small considering the vet had told us he would probably weigh in at around 80 lbs!  he’s about 55 lbs now and he’s a quirky combination of small dog and large dog all smooshed together in the same body.  he’s not very tall but he has a large head and chest but then really narrow hips and a thin little tail.  oh how i love him to pieces!  ok, enough…

yesterday we went for a walk in the woods to buttermilk falls which is as picteresque as it sounds.  he played in the water and we threw sticks up and down the trail. the leaves were changing colors, there was a nice breeze and it was a pretty perfect day.

painted cards

08.05.09

i’ve been missing painting recently.  i hadn’t done it in awhile and was really starting to feel like i spend entirely too much time in front of the computer.  so i whipped up some quick “hello” cards.  that way next time i need to send out a note or say happy birthday i have one handy.
