the story of o

Friday, August 19th, 2011

No, not that story of O, this is a PG-rated blog people. What I’m talking about is the story of Olive our new little pup!

Olive was found in a soup kitchen in Georgia. My friend Jane volunteers at the kitchen and when she met Olive and her brother she took them in and tried to find them  homes. She brought them to her local shelter where Olive’s brother was adopted out almost immediately.

Fast forward a few months, Jane is up here in the mountains (she lives half the year there and half here), when she receives a call from the shelter. Olive’s time has run out and they are going to euthanize her the following day. When Jane hears this she drives down to Georgia to rescue Olive and brings her back up here.

When Jane sent photos out asking for help to find this sweet girl a home I knew it was meant to be. These are the original photos that wooed me. How sweet is that little face?

We’ve had her for a week now. She and Dexter are getting along really well, they wrestle and run together like old friends. She still doesn’t really know her name (or that she shouldn’t chew on shoes) but it will all come in time.

molly mutt

I know, I know, I talk about dog related things way too much. But I love my little man (and my kitties too) and I’m always on the look out for things to make him (and me) happy.

To help make life a little easier is this ingenious line of dog beds from  Molly Mutt.  Rather than being a dog bed in the traditional sense it’s a dog duvet that you can use to cover an existing bed or that you can stuff with things you have around the house (old blankets, clothes, etc) and when it all gets so funky it could stand up and walk on it’s own you just pop it all into the wash and ta-da new dog bed.

halloween for the dogs

Wednesday, October 27th, 2010

ridiculous?  you bet.  super adorable?  absolutely.  halloween is just days away!  but not too late to snag a cute getup for your best friend.  my boy is a little too big for such costumes but it doesn’t stop me from looking.  they can all be found here. and even if you don’t dress them up you can give them a halloween treat made just for them.

chicks

Thursday, July 22nd, 2010

you may remember that i wrote about chickens a little while ago. we got those chickens as adults, they were older and in need of a home so we took them in. after realizing how nice they were to have around we decided to go ahead and get more, this time raising them from chicks.  there are 9 in total.  at the moment they are living indoors but i take them out into my vegetable garden every day so they can peck around. you can see more photos of them here.

while picking up a few goodies for dexter i came across these and scooped them up immediately.  he loved them (shocking, i know).

if you have a pup in your life that needs a doughnut fix you can get these and a few other cute treats right here.

dexter update

Tuesday, October 6th, 2009

it’s been awhile!  my last dexter update was back in july.  the little man is 10 months old now, i can’t believe he’ll be a year in no time at all!  he’s gotten a bit bigger but not much.  he’s quite small considering the vet had told us he would probably weigh in at around 80 lbs!  he’s about 55 lbs now and he’s a quirky combination of small dog and large dog all smooshed together in the same body.  he’s not very tall but he has a large head and chest but then really narrow hips and a thin little tail.  oh how i love him to pieces!  ok, enough…

yesterday we went for a walk in the woods to buttermilk falls which is as picteresque as it sounds.  he played in the water and we threw sticks up and down the trail. the leaves were changing colors, there was a nice breeze and it was a pretty perfect day.

the perfect dog bowls

Tuesday, July 21st, 2009

how perfectly simple are these dog bowls?  clean lines, good solid shape and (thankfully) absent of any sort of bone icon or (god forbid) the words bow-wow on it.  i love them!  and yes, i know dexter doesn’t care what he eats and drinks out of.  as a matter of fact he routinely uses his food bowl as a chew toy.  but i’ll pretend that he’s impressed and happy to have such cool new bowls.

look at my little man grow!  this photo was taken in the adirondacks over the holiday weekend.  he looks so well behaved in this photo…  like a perfect young dog, not the mischievous little scamp that he is.
